Our Philosophy: Ikigai
The thing that makes life feel worth living.
Pronounced: 'ee-kee-guy'
Origins
The concept traces back to Japan's Heian Period (794-1185), combining two powerful words:
生き (iki) means "life" or "alive"
甲斐 (gai) comes from "kai" (shell), which was historically valuable; thus 'gai' means "worth," "value," or "benefit"
Combined, these words signify the value or worth in living, the reason one gets up in the morning. Your raison d'être.
The Global Adaptation
A popularized global adaptation (developed by astrologer Andrés Zuzunaga) uses four overlapping circles in a Venn Diagram to help discover your Ikigai:
❖ What are you good at?
❖ What do you love?
❖ What can be rewarded?
❖ What does the world need?
The intersection of these circles is your IKIGAI
For many South Africans, each day is a repeated cycle of uncertainty, hardship, and survival. In the struggle, many lose their sense of purpose, their ikigai.
At PurposeXchange, we support organisations fighting for economic empowerment, against gender-based violence, and for social equality. We provide the resources they need to restore hope and break cycles.
